Tentacle: Breaking Boundaries with Graffiti-inspired Jewellery

A Unique Jewellery Set by Liu Yue

When it comes to art, graffiti is often seen as rebellious and unconventional. However, in recent years, graffiti art has gained recognition and is now being showcased in galleries and museums. Liu Yue, a talented designer, draws inspiration from this evolving trend and translates it into fine jewellery with her Tentacle collection.

What sets Tentacle apart is its unique inlay design, which allows for the use of flawed gems. By covering the gems with a fractured-style gold pattern and adding a lace back, Liu Yue enhances the value of lower quality gems, offering more options for jewellery enthusiasts.

Another distinguishing feature of Tentacle is its unconventional motifs. Liu Yue breaks away from traditional jewellery designs featuring flowers, birds, or animals, and instead focuses on ideology. Each piece in the collection represents a different concept, making it a thought-provoking and meaningful addition to any jewellery collection.

The realization of Tentacle involves a combination of wax curving and laser welding techniques. The jewellery is crafted using silver and glass materials, creating a stunning contrast between the delicate metalwork and the vibrant green glass.

One of the biggest challenges in creating Tentacle was the gem setting design. Liu Yue had to find a solution that would protect the stones without compromising their beauty. The innovative approach of separating the top and bottom parts of each triangle and using laser welding proved to be successful, ensuring the durability of the jewellery.

The Tentacle project started in November 2014 in Milan and was completed in November 2016 in Yiwu. During her time in Milan, Liu Yue was inspired by the graffiti art she encountered near a chapel in the suburb. She observed the vibrant and expressive artwork every Sunday, which fueled her creativity and led to the birth of Tentacle.

Recognized for its ingenuity and creativity, Tentacle was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category in 2017. This prestigious award celebrates designs that embody resourcefulness, technical skill, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
